At Columbia College Chicago, I took a comprehensive course on industry deals, exploring the critical role of legal transactions in the music business.

I gained experience in reading, reviewing, and analyzing contemporary agreements across various industry areas.

I honed skills in bargaining power, industry standards, incentivization, risk and uncertainty, and party expectations. This class equipped me with practical knowledge and a basic understanding of the real-life deals that sustain the music industry.

Live Session Agreement

This agreement addressed the various rights and interests implicated by the artist's appearance and the resulting video. Key considerations included ownership of the final recordings and the permissible uses of these recordings in the marketplace. The contract covered various licenses, including copyrights, trademarks, and "name and likeness" rights, alongside standard contractual provisions such as royalties, accounting, and representations and warranties.

Exclusive Recording Agreement

While annotating this contract, I took into account the similarities and differences between the deals I studied throughout the semester and how they interacted with each other. For example, I considered how recording agreements affect the payment of producer royalties, "label waivers" in side artist deals, and third-party rights clearances for influencers.
